The fifth webinar of the Acreditación Claugto series, focused on the "Health, Safety, and Environment" evaluation area, was led by Alfredo Nieto, HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Manager at Hutchinson.
The webinar was titled 'Occupational Health and Safety,' and Alfredo addressed the topic based on practical examples of activities carried out at Hutchinson. He explained that they have a safety policy based on the principle of continuous improvement, which is why they implemented management systems that essentially involve creating action plans and measuring results through evaluations.
On the other hand, and with the aim of preventing any type of accidents, they have the 'Safe Ring' system, which follows the Deming cycle: Act, Plan, Do, and Review. Subsequently, audits are conducted in different plants worldwide to assess the implementation of this system.
Alfredo Nieto emphasized the importance of paying attention to all types of accidents among employees, not just those resulting in incapacity, as minor accidents can have significant repercussions in the long run. In this regard, he advised keeping a record of 'near-misses' to prevent any negative outcomes.
He also mentioned that a good practice involves engaging managers in the safety of personnel to ensure they have appropriate preventive measures. He highlighted ergonomic evaluation as essential, especially since many companies involve physical labor.
He addressed emergency plans in general, as they are another fundamental aspect. They serve to manage a crisis if it was not prevented by the plan itself. It is necessary to visualize different possible scenarios and develop a plan for each scenario.
Finally, he emphasized that proper waste management can represent significant savings for companies, as most of these wastes are sellable. Therefore, in addition to caring for the environment, they will be taking care of their finances.
