- There was a meeting with officials and representatives of Economy from the main states of Mexico with the automotive industry and the national network of automotive clusters, in which we were updated with analysis and scenarios regarding the impact of the strike of the three "big ones" in Detroit.
- The likelihood of a strike is very feasible to be triggered starting next Thursday at midnight, where there are 3 scenarios: One, that all 3 companies go on strike, that only 2 do, or just one similarly to what happened in 2019. Remember that in 2019, the strike lasted for 6 weeks.
- In this instance, it is mentioned that the union has funds to support striking workers for up to 11 weeks, with a subsidy of 500 USD per week. Meanwhile, in Mexico, if a strike were to occur in any of the previously mentioned scenarios, the impact would be visibly felt in reduced shifts or volumes starting from the first week of October.
- Some points were discussed on how to counteract the impact, among which stand out, on the one hand, reduced shifts through technical stoppages, vacation days, and scenarios that we will discuss soon in the different committees and groups of CLAUGTO.
- Once we have more information, we will detail it through the different communication channels.
Within these three relevant scenarios, the impact of a strike by one or all three companies is a significant and crucial amount for the industry, which could have medium- to long-term implications for recovery. It is discussed to potentially extend into the middle of the following year 2024.
If only 2 of the companies were to go on strike, the impact would be somewhat lower; however, their supply chain would still experience a significant impact and a shortage in their users' supplies.
And scenario number three, where only one of them goes on strike, depending even on which one it is, one of the most likely could be GM due to its history in 2019; finally, next Thursday at midnight, there will be much more clarity on these scenarios.
