The new Tiguan concludes a successful year of launches at Volkswagen de México.

  • Third launch of the year, following two successful manufacturing starts with the New Jetta and New Taos.
  • Production of this compact SUV began in 2017 at the Puebla plant. To date, more than 1.3 million units of this model have been produced.
  • The third generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan incorporates a powertrain made in Mexico, with EA888 2.0L 150kW and 200kW engines produced at Volkswagen de México's Guanajuato plant, which will be used in versions for the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Puebla, Puebla, December 11th, 2024. Volkswagen de México began production of the New Tiguan at the Puebla plant. This milestone marks a new era of manufacturing at the factory, closing 2024 with full throttle after two successful production launches with the New Jetta and New Taos.

The first production destination for the New Tiguan is Mexico, reaffirming the importance of the local market for Volkswagen’s strategy in this segment.

The Puebla plant has been producing this compact SUV since 2017, with more than 1.3 million units produced to date.

“With the start of production of the New Tiguan, we reaffirm our position as a key player for Volkswagen in the North American region. This SUV, built with the experience and quality of our manufacturing at our vehicle plants in Puebla and our engine plant in Guanajuato, has all the attributes to meet the high expectations of our customers,”, highlighted Holger Nestler, president & CEO of Volkswagen de México.

New Tiguan: Technological Innovation

The New Tiguan offers a completely redesigned body, a shorter rear overhang, and a slight increase in the wheelbase. It is built in a five-passenger configuration on the MQB evo platform, the evolution of Volkswagen’s Modular Transversal Platform (MQB), designed to optimize vehicle manufacturing with shared components, offering improvements in interior space, efficiency, and adaptability.

Additionally, the New Tiguan features an upgraded and more complex electronics setup than the previous generation, including the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster and a new infotainment infotainment system with a larger display, as well as enhanced safety and driving assistance systems.

The third generation of the Tiguan boasts a bold and expressive exterior design. It features a higher, more powerful front and slimmer headlights.

Sustainable Manufacturing and Strengthening of Production Capabilities

Since the announcement of this new production project in October 2022, Volkswagen de México has worked to strengthen its production capabilities to accommodate the third generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan on its lines.

This involved not only building a new paint shop, which will be a benchmark within the Volkswagen Group for its technology and sustainability but also making adjustments to the processes in other areas of the plant.

For the New Tiguan, new dies have been added for the production of parts such as side panels and fenders in the stamping process (presses). Additionally, several adjustments have been made to the body shop’s configuration and production equipment programming.

The New Tiguan also benefits from faster and safer communication between production areas, thanks to the construction of elevated tunnels for transporting finished body shells from the body shop to painting and assembly.

Volkswagen de México has implemented an innovative painting concept at the Puebla plant, the 2010V, which eliminates the Filler stage. This advance will be applied to the New Tiguan in the new paint shop, where the processes will be 100% electric.

This new paint shop will have the capacity to paint up to 90 vehicles per hour across two lines, offering eight color options for the New Tiguan, including three new shades: Ascot Grey, Avocado Green, and Waimea Blue. Additionally, this painting concept will also accommodate the bi-tone options currently available at the Puebla plant.

Flexibility and Efficiency for Two Models in One Segment

The Puebla plant, with over 50 years of experience in producing vehicles for local and export markets, demonstrates its capacity and flexibility by integrating the New Jetta and New Tiguan into a single assembly line.

Both models will share processes, such as assembly and painting, thanks to technological and production adjustments, such as the use of body conveyors (skids), which optimize mobility and create a more ergonomic environment for employees.

To achieve this synergy, the company trained its workforce not only in the new layout of the assembly shop (Hall 4) but also in the knowledge of new components and subassemblies, such as the new front and rear light assemblies.

For the New Tiguan, pre-series events were held on the production lines. This dynamic allowed for a faster adaptation of the new product to manufacturing processes.

As a result, the combination of the New Jetta and New Tiguan in a single production segment will reach a combined manufacturing capacity of over 1,000 units per day.

This third production launch at the Puebla plant is the result of teamwork by an interdisciplinary group of experts and technicians, as well as the areas of Production and Logistics, Quality, Purchasing, Technical Development, and support departments.

The Heart of the New Tiguan is Also Mexican

Volkswagen de México, Guanajuato Plant, strengthens its key role in the Volkswagen manufacturing network in North America. With over 10 years of experience, this plant located in Guanajuato Puerto Interior (GPI) will produce the EA888 2.0L 150 kW and 200 kW engines for the New Tiguan, which will be incorporated into versions for the U.S. and Canadian markets.

“This production start not only marks a new chapter for Volkswagen de México but also reinforces our commitment to sustainability, human-centered technological innovation, and excellence in our products. This powerful new SUV represents the perfect balance between design, efficiency, and functionality, making it a standout option for our customers in North America,"concluded Holger Nestler.
