MG Motor celebrated the sale of its 150,000th unit in Mexico and announced the establishment of a Research and Development Center, which will include the production of both combustion and electric vehicles for export to Latin America.
Mexico City, August 8th 2024 – MG Motor has reached the milestone of selling its 150,000th unit in Mexico and marked the occasion by announcing plans to establish a Research and Development Center in the country. This new center will focus on manufacturing combustion and electric vehicles for export to the Latin American market.
"Looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce plans to position Mexico as a hub for Latin America. This includes not only a manufacturing plant but also a research and development center. This move will enable us to produce vehicles and generate market intelligence specifically tailored to and by Latin America," said Zhang Wei, President of MG Motor.
As of now, the brand has not disclosed the investment amount or the plant's location. However, the project will be developed in phases. In its initial stage, the plant will have the capacity to produce more than 100,000 MG Motor units, supported by global manufacturer SAIC Motor. MG Motor also revealed plans to introduce IM, the group’s premium electric vehicle brand, to the Mexican market as part of this new era.
MG Motor’s announcement comes as other Chinese automakers like BYD, Great Wall Motors, and Chirey are also planning to establish manufacturing plants in Mexico. Notably, according to Automotive Directory, Automotive DirectoryChina invested $2.27 billion in Mexico's automotive sector during the first half of 2024, a 52.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
