According to the Japanese automaker, the electric powertrain technology, which doesn't require a charger, has been highly accepted by Mexican consumers. In just one year, 9,800 e-Power units were sold in Mexico.
Nissan sold 20,000 e-Power units across Latin America, with Mexico being the country with the highest sales, reporting over 14,000 vehicles already on the road.
This technology is available in two models: the Nissan X-Trail e-Power, which is sold in more than 10 markets in the region, and the Nissan Kicks e-Power, considered the favorite among Mexican consumers.
According to the Japanese automaker, the electric powertrain technology, which doesn't require a charger, has been highly accepted by Mexican consumers. In just one year, 9,800 e-Power units were sold in Mexico.
In August 2023, Rodrigo Centeno, CEO of Nissan Mexicana reported the sale of 4,200 e-Power units, of which 3,000 were Kicks and the remaining 1,200 were X-Trail.
By the end of July 2024, Nissan had sold 14,000 units in Mexico since October 2022, marking growth and acceptance of the technology.
Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) report that Nissan Mexicana sold 18,843 vehicles between the Kicks and X-Trail models, though it did not specify whether these were combustion or electric (e-Power) models.
The The Kicks e-Power sold in Mexico is imported from Thailand, but this year, the Japanese company decided that Mexico would be the production hub for combustion Kicks for the Americas, manufacturing 72,447 units from January to June.
However, Centeno had acknowledged that the sale of Kicks was limited by supply, stating, "We will sell as many as they send us."
The e-Power technology consists of a lightweight, compact lithium-ion battery and two motors: an electric motor connected to the wheels and powered by the battery to drive the vehicle, and a gasoline engine, whose sole purpose is to generate electrical energy to be stored in the battery. A compact, lightweight inverter manages the energy flow between the two components. In this way, the e-Power system's battery is automatically charged without the need for an external charger, thanks to the gasoline engine acting as a generator.
Nissan Mexicana explained that the brand's more than 70 years of experience in electric vehicles manufacturing have provided the framework to develop the e-Power propulsion technology.
Through this system, the vehicle is powered by a 100% electric motor, which is fed by batteries that draw power from a highly efficient turbocharged gasoline engine with variable compression.
This high-acceleration engine offers immediate response and a unique driving experience. Meanwhile, the gasoline engine serves the function of recharging the battery while driving.
