Challenges and Countermeasures for Today’s Automotive QMS

Miriam Galván, coordinator of the Claugto Operational Excellence Committee, introduced speaker Scott A. Gray, Director of Quality Products and Services at AIAG, who addressed three main challenges for quality management systems in today's automotive environment, including virtual auditing, developing competencies for remote workforce, and leveraging Quality 4.0 technologies for process control improvement.

The expert mentioned that there are 3 challenges in today's industrial operations landscape. He compared non-virtual audits with virtual audits, as a significant portion of the workforce will remain in remote work models. However, for manufacturing companies like OEMs, monitoring employee safety can be more challenging because through cameras, it is easier for risk details in the plant to go unnoticed, sometimes due to blind spots.

The second challenge is developing competencies in the remote workforce. For this particular situation, Scott suggests leveraging all online training opportunities, often freely available. However, it is essential to conduct assessments to validate learning. As for the third challenge, he recommends harnessing Quality 4.0 technologies to enhance the effectiveness of QMS.

He concluded by emphasizing that the best way to address the challenges is proactively, and one way to do this is by monitoring customer feedback.

Scott is the Director of Quality Products and Services at AIAG. Previously, he held leadership positions in quality at Eaton Corporation, Fruedenberg-NOK, Borg-Warner Automotive, and Motorola's Industrial and Automotive Electronics business. Scott began his career in the Buick Motor Division of General Motors. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from General Motors Institute in Michigan.
