During the first half of the year, 54,058 hybrid and electric cars in el paíswere sold in the country, the highest amount since 2016, the year for which the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) has records. Additionally, this represents an 80 percent increase compared to the first six months of 2023.
Odracir Barquera, president of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), explicó a El Sol de México that this increase is attributed to a rise in the supply of these types of vehicles, which implies more competitive and affordable prices for consumers.
"In this type of vehicle, due to the new technologies, growth is more pronounced, and this will continue to increase. However, the main point is that they have already surpassed a five percent market share in the last 10 months, which tells us, that consumers are already considering these products," said Barquera.
Within the green car segment, hybrids, los híbridos que combinan un motor de gasolina y uno eléctrico, lead the sales with 71.3 percent of the market, while electric vehicles represent 22.5 percent of the total, and the rest are plug-in hybrid cars, according to AMIA's report. ..
Barquera highlighted that consumers are increasingly aware of the benefits of green cars, such as the ability to drive during potential contingencies and the savings from not having to pay vehicle registration fees like traditional cars.
Currently, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo León, and Jalisco are the states where the sales of these types of Chinesevehicles are concentrated, representing a combined 59.9 percent of the total.
The AMIA . representative acknowledged that due to the lack of infrastructure for charging some unitssales are progressing more slowly.
Despite this, the industry representative stated that Mexico is an attractive market for hybrid and electric car manufacturers,, as they can benefit from the trade agreement with the United States and Canada to increase their production and commercialization.
"Mexico has a lot of potential, and this has been seen worldwide. The important thing is that our country continues to produce more hybrid and electric vehicles, as this will not only benefit the country's economy but will eventually grow the consumption of these vehicles," explained the executive.
Regarding the tariff measures of more than 100 percent on imports of lithium batteries and other Chinese components for hybrid and electric cars, promoted by the Joe Biden administration in the United States, Barquera considered that Mexico will not be directly affected, as it is not a transit country for these vehicles.
“Los tariffs on cars are only for those that have Chinese origin, and Mexico is not a transit country for Chinese vehicles, nor is the value chain. Therefore, we would not see any impact. Moreover, we do not produce the batteries, so the impact is only on China," he stated.
